Clean Toronto Together Launch a Showcase for Cooperation

on May 1, 2013 | 0 comments

Sunday April 14th marked the launch of Clean Toronto Together, an initiative of Live Green Toronto & Toronto Park People, and the beginning of the spring cleaning tradition for many Torontonians.

A day filled with events was planned by a coalition of community groups that hopes to launch Friends of Earl Bales Park, a group of local residents focused on the upkeep and maintenance of the beautifully landscaped 36 acre park.

With the cooperation of several groups like the North York Filipino Community Centre, Action for Neighbourhood Change, Bathurst-Finch Hub & staff from Councillor James Pasternak’s office, over 200 volunteers showed up on a frigid and windy Sunday afternoon to clean and green their community park.

The city prepared massive piles of mulch near the new saplings, and laid out paint equipment near the amphitheatre box office, as community members gathered and quickly spread across large tracts of parkland. Within minutes, volunteers were covering the park’s 36 acres and nearly 3kms of trails, collecting over 50 garbage bags worth of recycling and litter and mulching hundreds of newly planted trees.

Immediately after the massive clean-up effort, volunteers were rewarded with live performances in the park’s amphithetre by local musicians and a fancy drilling troop.

This was the first of 5 Clean Toronto Together events, culminating in a weekend clean-up across the city where residents are encouraged to head to their local parks to pitch in.
